Eco-School in our School

Our school is participating in the Eco-School activity. Eco-School is an activity which forms part of the worldwide Eco Schools programme. The Eco Schools Programme was launched in 1994 by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). Now more than 13 thousands schools around the world are participating in this project. Schools may be awarded – Green Flag. Through our participating in Eco School we will try to improve the quality of life in our school. We are exploring ways in which we can improve environment. We will try to foster teamwork, within our school; as well the community in which it is housed.

Three teachers: Ms. Joanie Xiberras; Ms. Monica Zammit; and Ms. Monica Farrugia direct the Eco School group in our school. The Eco School in our school is divided into two groups:

Group 1 members are: Desiree Bajada; Jessica Bugeja; Nicole Piscopo; Kimberly Camilleri; Charmaine Camilleri; Kimberly Falzon; Danica Ann Cassar; AnneMarie Camilleri; Marica Borg and Aurora Gatt.

Group 2 members are: Desiree Bajada; Jessica Bugeja; Amy Camilleri Debono; Antonella Portelli; Marlene Muscat; Cherie Cauchi; Christabel Sciberras; Daniela Debrincat; Jasmine Bajada; Nicole Borg; Daphne Caruana and Matilde Farrugia. The meeting is held every Monday during the second break.

Aims: Where do we want to go?

  • Audit: Where are we now?
  • Priorities: What do we want to look first?
  • Action Plans: How do we get there?
  • Implementation: What plans are we putting into practice?
  • Evaluation: How are we doing?

The committee is the core of the Eco School process, responsible for organising and directing activities. Consisting of the stakeholders of the school community (pupils, teachers, cleaners, caretakers, parents and governors), the committee is democratic and run by the students themselves. Whatever the type of school or age group, involvement in the committee is essential.

The 7 steps of the Eco School process:

  1. Environmental Review
  2. Action Plan
  3. Monitoring and Evaluation
  4. Curriculum Work
  5. Informing and Involving
  6. Eco Code
  7. Eco Schools Committee.
